It’s easy. Participate!
Now those of you from my own club (First Oakville Toastmasters) will note on the schedule that I’m Xed out every Thursday night that’s because I’m working as a photography instructor most Thursdays.
But, here’s how I get the most out of my Toastmaster season even though I’m not on the official schedule.
I know where I am in my Toastmaster educational program. I know what speeches I need to give to get my next accreditation (which for me is ATM-S) so I keep a speech in my back pocket. If I see someone can’t fulfill their obligation to speak and I’m available, I jump right in and grab the spot.
Anybody can do this. If you want to get some extra speeches in during the year, let the vice-president of education know that you’re eager. BTW if you’re really eager, there’s nothing stopping you from giving a speech or two at another club. And, for those of you with your CC designation, the Might Oaks Advanced Club is a perfect place to not only give your speeches but to receive a higher level of evaluation.
BTW when I say a higher level, I don’t mean harsher but it is more useful especially for speakers who do speak in public.
Which brings to mind another point: I’m doing as many as five or six three-hour workshops weekly. I can only do this thanks to the training and support I’ve received over the years (getting on 15 now) that I received from Toastmasters just like you at meetings just like ours.
Finally: You want to get better in a hurry? Then enter ever contest that you are qualified (note I didn’t say ready or comfortable in doing). This includes the International (if you qualify), Tall Tales, Humorous, Evaluation and Table Topics.
Looking forward to seeing you on the podium
